Sealants are used mainly with children, but occasionally in adults as well. Their function is to prevent decay in newly grown adult teeth.
A thin resin coat is bonded onto grooves of the chewing (Occlusal) surface of permanent back teeth. This protects them from bacteria and acids that contribute to tooth decay by physically acting as a barrier.
