Restorations/Fillings

If sweet, hot and cold may irritate your tooth you have a cavity (decay) when there is a black or brown spot on the tooth. Some cavities are between the teeth or in the grooves of the chewing surface.

You have three options: observe the decayed area; if it is small it may re-mineralize with good home care or to place a filling to restore the tooth.

If the tooth is not treated the decay may progress. Should it decay deep enough, the tooth’s pulp will be infected and abscess. More involved care (root canal therapy) will be needed to save the tooth or it may have to be removed.
In the past, two most commonly used filling materials is silver amalgam or tooth colored composite resin. Amalgam is slowly being phased out of use for environmental reasons. Our office uses tooth coloured composite resin.
